Four people were said to be killed in a truck and bus accident that occurred during the early morning hours of May 21. All four individuals killed were passengers of the bus. An additional 24 individuals were transported to the hospital.
The bus was traveling on a route to Los Angeles when the truck accident occurred. The semi-truck apparently jackknifed on Interstate 10 close to the California border. The truck reportedly hit a median strip and spilled pipes onto the highway. While accidents were generated accidents on both sides of the interstate, the pipes also apparently played a part in the bus overturning.
According to one California transportation official, the pipes either struck the bus loaded with passengers or caused the bus to swerve. In any event, the bus overturned and tumbled down an embankment for 40 or 50 feet. Besides the bus and the truck, at least two other vehicles were also involved in the accident.
Any accident such as this one will require extensive investigation as there could be several causes of the crash. The truck driver may have been speeding or inattentive. It’s also possible that the truck driver was cut-off in traffic and this caused it to veer into the median. Trucks are several times the size of typical vehicles on the road. While motor vehicle accidents frequently occur along our highways, truck accidents are particularly significant because of the potential amount of damage that can be caused.
