State officials say traffic fatalities again on the rise in California

After several years of considerable improvements in safety, the annual number of traffic deaths is again on the rise in California. In fact, in 2010 there were fewer California traffic fatalities than during any other year since World War II, but there has been a 13 percent increase since 2010.

So why is the state seeing an uptick in fatal accidents now? And why do state officials expect the trend to continue?

The factors are various. For example, since the end of the recession, more drivers are employed, so more drivers are on California roads. When even one of those motorists fails to drive safely, there is a greater risk of a crash.

Distracted driving is another factor that continues to result in collisions. While California law bans use of handheld electronic devices while driving, a survey from earlier this year found an increase in the number of Californians who use their smartphones behind the wheel.

State officials also point to increased interest in motorcycles as a factor in why fatalities are up. Since the recession ended, more people, and particularly older riders, have been riding their motorcycles on California highways. Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable to injury in auto accidents, and a collision is almost certain to cause harm.

Additionally, there is the issue of drugged driving. State officials have noted an upswing in these kinds of crashes.

The reality is that personal responsibility plays an immense role in preventing auto accidents. If you or a loved one has been injured in a crash, then don’t hesitate to speak with a personal injury lawyer who can protect your interests and hold the responsible party accountable.
