What Is Fosamax?
Alendronate (or Fosamax) is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in women who have undergone menopause and to treat osteoporosis in men. It is used to treat Paget's disease of the bone in both genders. Fosamax slows bone loss while increasing bone mass, which may prevent bone fractures.
Fosamax Side Effects
Common side effects of Fosamax include:
- Mild heart burn
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Eye pain
- Mild joint pain/swelling
Serious side effects include:
- Chest pain
- Pain or difficulty when swallowing
- Body aches
- Flu-like symptoms
- New/unusual pain in the thigh or hip
- Severe heartburn
- Burning pain in upper stomach
- Jaw pain or numbness
- Burning under ribs or back
FDA's Role In Fosamax
In January of 2011, the FDA announced that Fosamax tablets and oral solution Fosamax Plus D (alendronate sodium/cholecalciferol) tablets, as well as a multitude of other bisphosphonates were required to add the following to their label warnings: "5.5 Atypical Subtrochanteric and Diaphyseal Femoral Fractures Atypical, low-energy, or low trauma fractures of the femoral shaft have been reported in bisphosphonate-treated patients. These fractures can occur anywhere in the femoral shaft from just....."
