What Is Levaquin?
Levofloxacin injection is used to treat infections such as pneumonia; chronic bronchitis; and sinus, urinary tract, kidney, prostate (a male reproductive gland) and skin infections.
Side Effects Of Levaquin
Liver damage (hepatotoxicity) can occur in people who take Levaquin. We suggest that you talk to your doctor right away if you have symptoms such as:
- Stomach pain
- Nausea or vomiting
- Abdominal pain or tenderness
- Unusual fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Light-colored bowel movements
- Dark-colored urine or yellowing of skin or the whites of eyes
Effects on the central nervous system. Some people taking fluoroquinolone antibiotics including Levaquin report having seizures. Inform your provider immediately if you experience seizures or any of these symptoms:
- Anxious or nervous feelings
- Suicidal thoughts or acts
- Trouble sleeping/insomnia
Patients also report numerous allergic reactions:
- Trouble breathing or swallowing
- Swelling of the lips, tongue, face
- Hives and skin rash
- Throat tightness, hoarseness
- Rapid heartbeat
Intestine infection (pseudomembranous colitis) has also been reported in some cases.
Sensation/nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy) changes:
Serious changes to heart rhythms (QT prolongation and torsades de pointes)
Levaquin can cause a rare heart problem called prolongation of the QT interval. This condition can cause an abnormal heartbeat and can be dangerous.
People who take Levaquin and other fluoroquinolone medicines with oral antidiabetes medicines or with insulin can get low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Follow your health care provider's instructions for how often to check your blood sugar. If you have diabetes and you get low blood sugar while taking Levaquin®, stop taking Levaquin® and call your health care provider right away. Your antibiotic medicine may need to be changed.
- Sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity)
- Joint problems. Children have an increased chance of problems in joints and the tissues around joints.
- Low blood pressure
- False-positive urine screening results for opiates
