FDA's Role in Ortho Evra
According to the FDA, the contraceptive patch, Ortho Evra®, has been reported to cause life-threatening and fatal heart attacks, pulmonary embolisms, and other serious medical problems. Women who use Ortho Evra® are exposed to 60 percent more estrogen than those who use a contraceptive pill.
In January 2008, the FDA approved an update to the label on Ortho Evra®. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved additional changes to the Ortho Evra Contraceptive Transdermal (Skin) Patch label to include the results of a new epidemiology study that found that users of the birth control patch were at higher risk of developing serious blood clots, also known as venous thromboembolism (VTE), than women using birth control pills. VTE can lead to pulmonary embolism.
