Truckers: Ten Steps to Prevent Distracted Driving

Distracted driving claims an average of nine lives each day and accounts for over 1000 injuries, reports the National Highway Safety Administration. The cost to organizations, related to accident injuries and deaths, is hefty. A single vehicle crash can cost employers about $16.000 according to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA). That amount soars to over $74,000 if the accident results in injuries. In the case of a fatal crash the cost can be $500,000 or greater. As mobile technology continues to develop, driver distractions increase accordingly. The importance of implementing an exemplary driver distraction program in work truck fleets of all sizes becomes paramount [...]

Is An Employer Liable for a Workplace Injury?

Any workplace injury is serious and both the injured worker, as well as the employer, needs to take immediate action. Whether it is a serious accident on a construction site or plant floor, a traffic accident during a delivery, or a slip and fall on the office floor, following established company protocol can significantly reduce an employer’s liability. The same protocol should be followed even if the employee incident is due to a preexisting condition such as a fainting spell or seizure. Workers Safety Expectations Employers have a duty of care, under the health and safety laws, to provide employees with a safe workplace. A series [...]

New Program Promises Improved Traumatic Brain Injury Prognosis

What happens when a patient is admitted to a trauma center with a traumatic brain injury (TBI)? Clinicians will first classify the injury as mild, moderate or severe, by assessing the patient’s consciousness levels. The differences in TBIs will vary greatly from the initial trauma and assessment to the resulting effects in the years that follow. The use of broad classifications for these injuries can be detrimental by limiting the predictability of the patient’s outcomes, both long-term and short-term. “Every traumatic brain injury is unique,” said Vignesh Subbian, an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, or BME, and the Department of Systems and Industrial [...]

Are More Deaths from Large Truck Crashes Caused by Drivers Racing the Clock?

Does a federal rule requiring truckers to take a rest break after eight hours of driving have them racing to make up time, causing an increase in fatal crashes? Some in the industry claim that it does. According to data provided by the Highway Traffic Safety Administration, deaths from large truck crashes in 2017 reached the highest level in 29 years. While deaths in motor vehicle crashes declined by 2 percent from the prior year, large-truck fatalities rose 9 percent to 4,761, an increase of 392 fatalities above the prior year. Truckers accounted for about 1300 of those deaths with the remaining 72 percent being occupants [...]

Knowing and Obeying California Truck Lane Restrictions

If you ever drove outside the state of California and found yourself sandwiched between two big rigs on a highway, you know how terrifying it can be. Should you speed up or slow down? Is one of them going enter your lane, unaware of your presence, causing a serious crash? In California, the truck to your left would be guilty an “out of lane’” violation. You have probably noticed that some CHP officers drive pickups with enclosed beds and wear blue utility uniforms in lieu of the more familiar tan police uniform. These officers are usually part of the CHP’s Commercial Mobile Road Enforcement Unit. The [...]

Six Important California Bicycle Safety Tips

Follow the Rules and Use Common Sense More than 100 bicyclists are killed in California each year and over 100,000 are injured in collisions. These injuries are commonly the result of the bicyclist or drivers bad judgment, lack of skill or attention, or failure to obey traffic laws.  Although bicyclists and motorists share the same rights and responsibilities, and are subject to the same rules and regulations, bicyclists for the sake of their own safety and the safety of others, must pay especially close attention to traffic signs, signals and crosswalks and follow all the rules of the road. These rules are available to all bicyclists [...]

UCLA Brain Injury Study: Every Cell has a Story to Tell

Thanks to a University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) brain injury study, scientists now have a real time window into how head injury affects thousands of individual cells and genes simultaneously in mice. This approach, reported in Nature Communication, and supported by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), could lead to precise treatments being developed for traumatic brain injury. “Instead of clustering responses according to categories of cells in TBI, we can now see how individual cells in those groups react to head injury,” said Patrick Bellgowan, Ph.D., program director at NINDS. UCLA professors, Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, Ph.D. and Xia Yang, Ph.D., and colleagues, [...]

Company Settles Construction Death Case for $2.5 Million

Berkeley Redevelopers, a New Jersey construction company, has agreed to pay $2.5 million to the estate of Raymond Crosby, an equipment mechanic, crushed to death during the demolition of a former Woolworth store. The construction company failed to obtain a building evaluation by a demolition engineer to properly tear down the building the suit alleged. The construction death resulted when Crosby, an employee of Edgewood Properties, was cutting notches into a steel support beam, at the Beachwood Shopping Center in Berkeley Township, when the roof fell on top of him. Crosby had no prior experience with demolitions. He was sent to the site to repair a [...]
