Truck Accident Test Shows Need For Side Underride Guards

Underride accidents account for twenty-five percent of all fatal truck accidents. California leads the country in the number of all underride deaths with 426 recorded between 1993 and 2015. Death by underride is drastically undercounted, as some crash report forms do no contain a check box for underrides. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tested safeguards called AngelWings that prevent passenger cars from sliding beneath the side of a tractor-trailer or large truck. Side underride crashes generally occur when a tractor-trailer jackknifes, causing vehicles behind to crash into the side. Very often airbags fail to deploy because of the height of the trailer. Roofs can [...]

Football Not Alone with Sports Related Head Injuries

Football has recently dominated the news regarding sports related head injuries as the focus turned to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive, degenerative brain disease discovered in a large number of former football players. The fact is that there are many other sports where athletes face a high risk of receiving a traumatic brain injury. When viewing statistics related to different sports and the frequency of brain injuries it is easy to be confused. Most studies show that cycling has the highest rate of head injuries based on emergency room admissions. Boxing is not even considered. Does this mean a parent should discourage bike riding and [...]

Sleep Apnea Rule Withdrawal Denounced by Schumer and Med Groups

Three medical groups have followed the lead of head Democrat Chuck Schumer, denouncing the transportation agencies withdrawal of the sleep apnea rule. Early in August, Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer asked the U.S. DOT to “immediately reverse course” on it’s recent decision to withdraw a rule requiring sleep apnea screening for truckers and railway operators. He said that the DOT’s decision to withdraw the rule “commemorates a disaster waiting to happen.” “It’s high time to move forward with making sleep apnea testing a federal requirement; no ifs, and or buts about it,” Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement to the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA). When the news carries a story of a California limousine accident, it invokes an image of people having the time of their life, suddenly ruined by tragedy. San Diego Police use the Drager Drug Test 5000 to Assist in Making DUI Marijuana Arrests

Last month the first arrests were reported in San Diego for driving under the influence of marijuana using the new Drager Drug Test 5000. The device acts much like a Breathalyzer except it requires police to swab the inside of a driver’s mouth and test the results onsite for active THC. Once a positive result is returned, the police can obtain a warrant for a blood drawing to determine the actual blood level of THC. While a blood alcohol test is generally accurate, a screening for THC may be inconclusive. There is no level of THC that is a current standard for a DUI marijuana charge [...]
