Vehicle rollovers: often deadly and often owing to driver error

For obvious reasons, every type of vehicle accident has the potential to be serious.

And that is especially true concerning rollover crashes.

As noted on a safety-related website page sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, rollovers “are complex crash incidents [that] are particularly violent in nature.”

There are myriad reasons for that.

For starters, it is a relevant and notable fact that many rollover accidents feature vehicles like SUVs, pickup trucks and vans of various configurations. We make a very direct point about SUVs — and, impliedly, those other vehicles — on the SUV Accident page of our website at the Vititoe Law Group in Ventura County. We note that “many of the features that make them so popular, such as a higher center of balance and narrower wheel base, potentially make them more accident prone.”

The NHTSA notes that, comparatively speaking, rollover crash outcomes are more closely linked with driver speed than are many other types of accidents.

Put another way: The faster a motorist is driving when a rollover occurs, the greater the potential for truly adverse consequences. Reportedly, about 75 percent of rollovers resulting in one or more deaths occur where the designated speed limit is at least 55 miles per hour.

Negligence can of course be a factor in a rollover accident occurring in California or elsewhere, with that certainly being noted by evidence the NHTSA says points to drunk driving in many rollover incidents.

The safety agency states that distracted driving behavior also “plays a significant role in rollover crashes.”

Liability-related questions and concerns regarding a rollover crash or any other type of vehicle accident can be addressed to a proven personal injury attorney.
