CDC: First Guidelines for Treatment of Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries in Kids

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has, for the first time, released specific guidelines for the treatment of young people with mild traumatic brain injuries, commonly referred to as concussions. An extensive review of the current research into mild traumatic brain injuries yielded the determination by a panel of experts as to the best practice based on the evidence. “It’s only recently that we started to have enough research to do this,” said Matt Gammons, the former president of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine in an interview with Popular Science. “For a long time, we didn’t know a whole lot about brain trauma [...]

American Academy of Pediatrics Issues New Child Safety Seat Guidelines

In an updated policy statement, scheduled for publication in the November 2018 issue of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics establishes new guidelines on car safety seats. The updated statement “Child Passenger Safety,” accompanied by a technical report, the AAP recommends that children remain in a rear facing child safety seat until they reach the maximum weight or height limits of the seat as recommended by the manufacturer.  This statement is contrary to the current AAP age criterion of two years for children to remain in rear-facing car seats. The original age recommendation was partly based on a study supported by biometric research that found lower [...]

How Safety Regulations Can Affect Your California Truck Accident Case

If you or a loved one suffers injuries as the result of a California truck accident, it will soon become evident that that these legal cases are considerably more complex than your typical motor vehicle accident.  A perplexing entanglement of federal, state and local regulations, that can cause burdensome litigation, governs the operation and maintenance of commercial trucks. The regulations at the federal level are created and enforced by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and are known as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR’s) which apply to interstate commercial vehicles that are 10,000 pounds or greater, carry hazardous materials or transport over eight [...]

Rutgers Study: New Unique Approach for Treating Traumatic Brain Injury

A team of researchers, in a Rutgers University study, has discovered two molecules that could be the basis for developing new drugs for the treatment of traumatic brain injuries. The study, which was recently published in the journal of Neurobiology of Disease, uncovered the findings. Lead author Bonnie Firestein, a professor of cell biology at Rutgers opined that damage caused by traumatic brain injuries isn’t just the result of the physical blow, but is connected to the release of a neurotransmitter referred to as glutamate. “I think that this opens up a whole new way of thinking,” Firestein said, “Because, if you want to help somebody [...]

CDC: Employers and Parents Can Help Keep Young Drivers Safe

From 2011 to 2015, 470 workers in the 16 to 24 year old age group died in motor vehicle accidents while on the job. This accounts for approximately 26 percent of all work-related deaths in this age group according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  This statistic could be lowered significantly if employers implemented policies and programs that follow federal and state laws regarding youthful drivers at work. At the same time and parents should teach safe driving behavior while calling the young drivers attention to hazardous driving expectations. While young drivers are still honing their skills and logging time behind the wheel, [...]

California Workplace Injury Suit Filed Against Tesla by Burned Worker

An electrical explosion at the Fremont California Tesla plant caused severe burns and suffering, according to a workplace injury lawsuit filed by Son Nguyen, the injured factory worker. The suit alleges that the company was focused primarily on increasing productivity rather than employee safety. Mr. Nguyen was a contractor at the plant on June 5, 2017, when an arc flash explosion thrust him 15 to 20 feet back, engulfing him in flames. He claims that the company refused to shut power to the equipment he was working on, because they did not want halt production for even a brief period. Nguyen says he is in constant [...]

Changes in Tiny Blood Vessels May Aid Traumatic Brain Injury Diagnosis

Research by the University of Pennsylvania indicates changes to tiny blood vessels in the brains of people with traumatic injuries, may aid in more precise diagnosis and better treatment decisions. The research presented at the American Academy of Neurology annual meeting on April 27, 2018, showed changes in the blood vessels may be linked to a spectrum of cognitive symptoms following a traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI accounts for 2.5 million emergency room visits, 280,000 hospitalizations and an average of nearly 50,000 deaths annually, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly one third of all injury deaths are attributed to TBIs. “The relationship [...]

Electrocution: A Common Hazard at Home or at Work

Electric Power -- when it fails we realize how much we take it for granted. It is a modern convenience that we expect as part of our everyday life. Throw a switch or push in a plug and power is there when we need it. Although it is relatively safe in its contained state, the transmission and storage of electricity can be extremely dangerous. In the U.S., an average of 400 people die from electrocution annually and an additional 4400 are injured. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), electrocution is the second leading cause of death in the construction industry, exceeded only by [...]
