The Long Road to Traumatic Brain Injury Recovery

Unlike a broken arm or a case of the flu there is no end date to recovering from a traumatic brain injury. There can be recovery seen months and even years after the initial injury. The success of the recovery from TBI varies greatly, depending on the severity and area of the brain injury as well as the individual. Two individuals with the same brain injury may recover over different lengths of time and by varying degrees. For example, persons under the age of two and those over the age of 60 have the worst prognosis for recovery even if their injuries are identical to someone [...]

Football Not Alone with Sports Related Head Injuries

Football has recently dominated the news regarding sports related head injuries as the focus turned to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive, degenerative brain disease discovered in a large number of former football players. The fact is that there are many other sports where athletes face a high risk of receiving a traumatic brain injury. When viewing statistics related to different sports and the frequency of brain injuries it is easy to be confused. Most studies show that cycling has the highest rate of head injuries based on emergency room admissions. Boxing is not even considered. Does this mean a parent should discourage bike riding and [...]

The Form and Severity of a Non-Penetrating Traumatic Brain Injury

When the human brain strikes the inside of the skull, is shaken violently or deprived of oxygen, a non-penetrating traumatic brain injury TBI is likely to occur. The damage from a traumatic brain injury may be temporary of permanent and in varying degrees of severity ranging from mild to catastrophic. Non-penetrating TBI’s are the most prevalent form of brain injury. While some traumatic brain injuries may be mild, requiring only rest as a treatment, others may be extremely severe, leading to lifelong debilitation, physically, cognitively and emotionally, with many leading to death. The type of traumatic brain injury as well as the level of severity, determines [...]

Impeding the Long Term Effects of Traumatic Brain Injury

The causes and cases of traumatic brain injury are innumerous, with motor vehicle accidents, falls and sports injuries being the most common. Recovery may occur but other serious conditions can develop days, weeks or even years after the initial trauma. Recently the news has been replete with stories regarding a condition known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which can develop years or even decades after sports related concussions. Brain Injury Statistics Darken the Start of Football Season

The recent awareness of traumatic brain injury, particularly chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) has cast a penumbra over the start of the football season. As fans scrutinize offensive lines and passing games and players still work to master playbooks, a new threat lurks on the sidelines. The threat is not a linebacker or a kick return specialist but a statistic. The potential for brain injury to players has many in the game rethinking whether they should to continue in the sport. A report released over the summer revealed that only a single player out of the 111 National Football Players tested was free of chronic traumatic encephalopathy [...]

Football Brain Injury Expert Omalu Calls Youth Football Child Abuse

The man who first identified the football brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), in former players, has blasted the sport with what is his most captious statement to date. Forensic pathologist Bennet Omalu, San Joaquin County’s chief medical examiner, whose revelations of the degenerative brain disease helped gain a better understanding of sports-related injuries, said letting children play football, is a form of child abuse. Omalu, whose memoir “Truth Doesn’t Have a Side,” published on Aug. 6, said that no one under 18 should play football. “Someday there will be a district attorney who will prosecute for child abuse, and it will succeed,” Omalu said. “It [...]

Study Reveals Dementia in Working Age Adults Connected to Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been associated with an increased risk of dementia in working-age adults, according to a recent study. The same study, which embodied the entire Finnish population, showed no relationship between TBI and later onset of Parkinson’s disease or ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Researchers from the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki University Hospital, who conducted the study, believe that these results may be of great benefit in the rehabilitation and long-term monitoring of TBI victims. Approximately one in three that receive a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury die and half of those that survive suffer a life-long disability. These grim statistics [...]

The First Imaging Library for Traumatic Brain Injury Announced

Cohen Veterans Bioscience and the American College of Radiology (ACR) is launching the first imaging library for traumatic brain injury (TBI). Clinical imaging tools will be developed to aid in the diagnosis and management of patients with TBI. In a press release published on the Cohen Veterans Bioscience website, 1.5 million Americans are affected by mild TBI annually. Despite the fact that most mild TBI’s display no outward signs of brain damage, these injuries lead to long-term cognitive, behavioral or physical issues in as much as 20 percent of cases. Neuroimaging, the method currently used by many hospitals is of little help in diagnosing TBI. According [...]

Rapid Assessment of Brain Bleeding from Head Injury by New Device

The AHEAD 300 hand-held EEG device, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2016, was the subject of a clinical trial conducted among adults in 11 hospitals. Researchers found that the device, developed by BrainScope Company Inc., of Bethesda Maryland, can quickly rule out whether a person with a head injury is likely to have brain bleeding requiring further evaluation and treatment. The results have an accuracy rate of 97 percent. Approximately 2.5 million people arrive at the emergency room with a suspected head injury each year in the U.S. according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most of these patients receive [...]
