Transvaginal Mesh

In recent years, many women have turned to transvaginal mesh as a treatment for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). For many, the treatment is effective. All too often, however, the mesh results in a number of serious and painful side effects.

The attorneys at Vititoe Law Group, are dedicated to helping women who have suffered a serious health event due to transvaginal mesh. If you have been injured, our experienced legal team will help you pursue the compensation you deserve.

Transvaginal Mesh Side Effects

The most frequent complications reported to the FDA for surgical mesh devices for POP repair include mesh erosion through the vagina (also called exposure, extrusion or protrusion), pain, infection, bleeding, pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia), organ perforation and urinary problems. There were also reports of recurrent prolapse, neuromuscular problems, vaginal scarring/shrinkage and emotional problems. Many of these complications require additional intervention, including medical or surgical treatment and hospitalization. One type of serious complication is vaginal mesh erosion. This occurs in 2 to 3 percent of patients and requires removal of part or the entire vaginal mesh repair material.

Vaginal mesh erosion may cause the following:

  • Infection
  • Severe pain
  • Perforation of the bladder, bowel or blood vessels
  • Multiple occurrences of the same condition

FDA’s Role In Transvaginal Mesh

In October 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned health care professionals about serious complications associated with vaginal mesh. At that time, it had received over 1,000 reports from manufacturers about complications.

Vaginal Mesh Complications Increase

On July 13, 2011, the FDA issued an updated safety communication on vaginal mesh, warning health care providers that serious complications associated with vaginal mesh are not rare — a change from what they had said in 2008. Having received reports of nearly 3,000 additional adverse events between 2008 and 2010, the agency said it was no longer clear that vaginal mesh repair for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) was more effective than other traditional methods of repair.
