What Is Yaz?

Yaz is a birth control drug, but one that is not recommended for all women in need of birth control. In fact, the U.S. Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising, and Communications sent Bayer Pharmaceuticals a warning letter concerning two television commercials: “Not Gonna Take it” and “Balloons” for YAZ (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) Tablets. The TV ads are misleading because they broaden the drug’s indication, overstate the efficacy, and minimize serious risks associated with the use of the drug.

Yaz Side Effects

Yasmin has been associated with serious side effects including stroke, heart attack and even death. Women having a history involving cardiovascular problems should be especially careful. The VAERS database lists a number of severe reactions including but not limited to severe allergic reactions, rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, chest tightness; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; fainting, irregular heartbeat, liver problems, unusual or severe vaginal bleeding, unusual tiredness or weakness, vaginal irritation or discharge and vision changes.

FDA’s Role in Yasmin

Safety Labeling Changes Approved By FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) – April 2010 and February 2012:

Thromboembolic Disorders and Other Vascular Problems

Data from a large, prospective cohort safety study of various COCs suggest that this increased risk, as compared to that in non-COC users, is greatest during the first 6 months of COC use. Data from this safety study indicate that the greatest risk of VTE is present after initially starting a COC or restarting (following a 4 week or greater pill-free interval) the same or a different COC.

Counsel patients that cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events from COC use, and that women who are over 35 years old and smoke should not use COCs.

Counsel patients that the increased risk of VTE compared to nonusers of COCs is greatest after initially starting a COC or restarting (following a 4-week or greater pill-free interval) the same or a different COC.
